Natalie

“Natalie? Natalie? I think we fell asleep.”

I stir awake to Art’s voice and am instantly annoyed that he’s not in bed next to me. Turning over, I find my phone still connected to the call from last night. Despite being barely conscious, I smile.

Natalie, pull it together.

“It’s still early; you can probably sleep some more.” His sleep-roughened voice runs over me, leaving me covered in goosebumps.

“Of course, I can sleep in; I’m practically unemployed,” I grumble, remembering my conversation with Geoff yesterday.

I think it would be best if the temp took on your full duties at the office. So you can focus on the wedding. I know it’s a lot to be driving back and forth from Denver to the venue.

He knew that was a lot, but apparently, not too much for me as long as I didn’t have to work my actual job?

What a joke.

“You know…” Art starts but doesn’t finish his thought.

“Hmm?” My eyes are closed again, and I nestle into my blankets and place the phone right next to my ear on the pillow.

“The drive from Denver to Ever Lake is a lot for you to do over and over again,” He repeats back what I told him last night.

“Yeah."

“And it seems like The Couple will probably need you to come up here at least a few more times, because they don’t care how inconvenient it is for you.”

“Right.” My mood plummets, and I try to focus on the warm snuggly feeling of my bed.

“And you don’t have to go into the office, right? Until after the wedding?”

“Ugh. Don’t remind me.”

“Well, why don’t you just come up here. Do your writing or just take some time off, or whatever.”

“Art, I’ll have to come up again. Geoff told me that he wants photos of all the ceremony sites this weekend.”

“They already chose the lookout,” he reminds me.

“Oh, sure, but they want to make sure that that’s the perfect one for them.”

“Jesus,” He grumbles, and I laugh. I’m at least partially used to the runaround.

“Yeah, so…” He’s quiet for a minute, and it’s just long enough for me to start drifting back to sleep. My body becomes heavy and light all at once, and I’m on the edge of dreamland when he finally speaks again.

“You could stay, Natalie. Here. With me.”

And that’s the last thing I remember before I fall back into my dreams.
